A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood is an entertaining film based on a true encounter with Mister Rogers.
The film is a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod (in the film the character is called Lloyd Vogel). After a jaded magazine writer is assigned to profile Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about kindness, love and forgiveness from America’s most beloved neighbour.
Mister Rogers was a Presbyterian minister, musician, writer, producer and television presenter in America. He is most famed for the preschool television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, which he created and hosted from 1968 to 2001.
Tom Hanks does a wonderful job of portraying Mister Rogers, with his mannerisms and timing, his portrayal is a fitting tribute to Fred Rogers, one of America’s national heroes.
The film is set as though it were an episode of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood with the story interspersed and segued between the TV show’s titles and segments, this can lead the film to feel slow in places, however this is intentional as the TV show was purposely a slow pace.
Though there isn’t much in the way of Christian content throughout the film, we do see Mister Rogers praying and talk a few times about praying and Christianity and see his Bible briefly, there is however the very strong theme of forgiveness flowing right through the film.
Overall, even though here in the UK we don’t know much about who Fred Rogers is, this is an interesting and entertaining film in which we see and learn about Fred Rogers through the eyes of a skeptical magazine writer. We see challenges of kindness, love and forgiveness, which we can all learn from and apply to living in today’s society.
