The film follows the extraordinary true story of conscientious objector Desmond T. Doss who saved 75 men in Okinawa, during the bloodiest battle of WWII, without firing a single shot. Believing that the war was just but killing was nevertheless wrong, he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon. As an army medic Doss single-handedly evacuated the wounded near enemy lines – braving enemy fire and putting his own life on the line.
Desmond T. Doss was a Seventh Day Adventist Christian who refused to carry or use a firearm or weapons of any kind. Desmond T. Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honour, for service above and beyond the call of duty.
Hacksaw Ridge is rated 15 in the UK due to strong bloody violence, gory injury detail and occasional language. The film does however have a strong powerful Christian message, that isn’t preachy but is central to the film, the film also opens with a scripture reading. The film is well directed and acted alongside a strong script which realistically portrays the horrors of war and the inspiring true story of Desmond T. Doss.
