Having grossed nearly $88 million worldwide, including Angel Studios’ biggest-ever opening weekend with a $22 million debut, DAVID has become one of the studio’s most successful theatrical releases to date. It also set the all-time record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a faith-based animated theatrical release.
The film has been praised for its detailed animation, created by Sunrise Animation Studios in Cape Town, South Africa. DAVIDserves as the culmination of the franchise following the five-part animated prequel miniseries Young David. The studio’s visual approach draws inspiration from the detail and artistic authenticity of DreamWorks’ The Prince of Egypt (1998), combined with a vibrant, contemporary animation style.
From the songs of his mother’s heart to the whispers of a faithful God, David’s story begins in quiet devotion. When the giant Goliath rises to terrorise a nation, a young shepherd armed with only a sling, a few stones and unwavering faith steps forward. Pursued by power and driven by purpose, his journey tests the limits of loyalty, love and courage — culminating in a battle not just for a crown, but for the soul of a kingdom.
The original score was composed by Joseph Trapanese, with original songs written by a team of lyricists led by Jonas Myrin (Development Music Director), alongside Chad Carouthers, Brock Monroe, Molly Kate Kestner, Marty & Misha Goetz, Jonathan Smith and Phil Wickham.
The film features an acclaimed voice cast led by Phil Wickham as David, alongside Lauren Daigle, Asim Chaudhry and Brandon Engman.
