Tyson’s Run is an inspirational and heart-warming film.
Tyson’s run follows fifteen-year-old Tyson who attends public school for the first time, which changes his life forever. While helping his father clean up after the football team, Tyson befriends champion marathon runner Aklilu. Never letting his autism hold him back, Tyson becomes determined to run his first marathon in hopes of winning his father’s approval.
With the help of an unlikely friend and his parents, Tyson learns that with faith in yourself and the courage to take the first step, anything is possible.
This is a gripping story and you really end up rooting for Tyson who is fantastically portrayed by Major Dodson alongside a cast including Rory Cochrane, Amy Smart and Barkhad Abdi.
While this is a faith based film, there are only small nods towards Christianity with the characters praying at meal times, a short Church service and 1 Corinthians 9:24: “Do you not know that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize” at the end of the film. Sadly however there are many uses of God’s name in vein which is off putting for a Christian film (well any film really).
Overall Tyson’s Run is an inspirational story, that for those with autistic children or even children with any additional medical or other needs is an encouraging story, helping others to see that these children are not different, they can achieve and they do not need to be held back due to their condition, they are brave and fearless. God made each and everyone of us and we have a responsibility to treat others as we would want to be treated. Let’s put our families first, stand up for our children and show love to others.
